Bowter develops self-driving boats – Karlstad, the first city in Sweden to test the technology

During the summer, residents of Karlstad and tourists had the opportunity to rent Bowter’s electric boats, departing from Slussvakten. The boats are equipped with the company’s own AI solution, “AI Captain.” Now, focused efforts are underway to take the technology a step further by developing autonomous features linked to the system. By the summer of 2025, Karlstad will be the first city to test the technology in real-world conditions.

Bowter’s boats are currently equipped with solar panels for self-charging and use an automated booking system. With the addition of sensors connected to Bowter’s AI solution, the technology is nearing full autonomy, meaning the boats could become fully self-driving.

– It’s exciting to see that rentals this summer have been a success. Karlstad’s waterways provide a unique opportunity to see the city from a new perspective, and the environment is truly beautiful. Now, we are developing self-driving boats to make these experiences even more accessible, especially in narrow waterways. Karlstad will be the first to test them this summer, says Jonas Uleseth, Co-founder, Bowter

– The increase in visitors this summer is something we are very proud of, and we see Bowter as an essential and important part of this success. Giving visitors the chance to experience the Klarälven River in their own boat for a day is a fantastic opportunity. Bowter contributes to making our Värmland region even more attractive for everyone who lives, works, or visits here, says Mia Landin, CEO, Visit Värmland

– It’s fantastic that we have companies, in Karlstad, that not only innovate and grow but also contribute to developing Karlstad as a destination. This initiative aligns perfectly with the municipality’s sustainability efforts, where residents, businesses, associations, and other community partners actively collaborate as co-creators and resources, says the chair of the municipal executive board, Linda Larsson (S)
